BUENA VISTA, Va.—The women's soccer team returned home last night after a steep loss at Radford to face the Cougars of Averett Univeristy in what would turn out to be quite the offensive battle with seven goals scored in the first half and a 4-3 Southern Virginia victory.
Southern Virginia (3-5) came out swinging with two early breakaway goals by sophomore Jamilla Gambee. Shortly thereafter, the Cougars (0-4-1) fired back with two goals of their own within six minutes of each other, tying the match at two goals apiece.
Soon after Averett's counter attack the Knights found the back of the net again after a through ball from sophomore Sierra Sorenson found the feet of freshman Emily McFadyen who finished with a chip shot over the goalkeeper's head.
Quickly following McFadyen's goal, the Cougars answered once again with a goal sneaking inside the left post, tying the match 3-3.
With 14 seconds remaining in the first half, the Knights scored what would end up being the deciding goal of the match off of a cross from freshman Anne Powell that found McFadyen for her second goal of the night.
No goals were scored in the second half, and the Knights took the win, 4-3.
Freshman goalkeeper Carmel Hardy picked up the first win of her college career and recorded seven saves.
The Knights head to Maryland on Saturday, Sept. 26 to take on St. Mary's in their first conference game of the year. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m.
