Knights Lose on Last Second Layup to Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell short in crunch time Wednesday night, losing to the University of Mary Washington 75-73.

Southern Virginia's (4-14, 0-7) offense clicked in the first half jumping to their biggest lead of the game 35-25 with 3:34 remaining. The Knights shot 48.1 percent from the floor with 11 of the team's 13 made field goals coming from behind the arc. Sam Armstrong, Austin Wood, and Jaron Anderson led the Knights with nine first-half points each. The Eagles (14-4, 6-1) were limited to shooting just 32. 4 percent from the field.

The Eagles climbed back into the game in the second half taking their first lead of the game, 58-57 at the 12:18 mark. The game went back-and-forth until the Knights pulled ahead by five with five minutes remaining. The Eagles closed the game on a buzzer-beating layup by Jacob Williams to complete an 11-4 run to secure the 75-73 victory.

Anderson off the bench led the Knights with 15 points and added five rebounds. Wood recorded a new season-high with of 14 points and Armstrong chipping in 12 points. Alec Johnson's collected a game-high nine assists along with six rebounds and seven points.

Southern Virginia returns home to host Penn State Harrisburg Saturday, Jan. 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the Knight Arena.
