SALEM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team took part in the Southeast Duals Saturday with the team falling in each of its three matches, 29-16 to Huntingdon, 48-0 to Otterbein and 41-6 against Liberty.
The Knights started the day off against Huntingdon. Aaron Freidhof collected Southern Virginia's first points of the match with 15-4 major decision victory at the 133-pound weight class.
The Knights then dropped the next six weight classes until the final two weight classes at 197 and 285.
At 197 for the Southern Virginia, Matt Speelman came away with a pin in five minutes as he defeated Jack Haury. With the Knights now trailing 10-29, Nico Ramirez continued his strong season pinning his opponent in 2:50 to end the match 29-16 in favor of Huntingdon.
The second match of the day turned out to be the Knights most difficult, dropping each weight class. Aldair Moran at the 141-pound weight class fell in a hard fought 4-1 decision and Matthew Mangus came up short in the 165-pound weight class in a 11-5 decision.
Ramirez was handed his first loss of the season as he faced the current No. 1 at the 285-pound weight class in Drew Kasper and was dealt the 16-6 major decison defeat.
Southern Virginia ended its day against Liberty with Tyrell Barney earning the lone victory at the 133-pound slot. Friedholf jumped up wieght classes for a matchup at the 141-pound class and fell in a close 4-1 decison. Alex Brunner also competed closely with his competitor in the 285-pound weight class but eventually fell in a 10-4 decision.
The Knights will wrestle again next Saturday, Nov. 23 in their home-opener in a quad-match, where they will compete against McDaniel, Mont Alto, and Blue Lights.
