LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University wrestling team wrapped up competition Saturday afternoon at Liberty University, falling in both their duals against West Virginia Tech 27-22 and to Liberty University 43-9.
The first match of the day featured a close dual against West Virginia Tech with the Golden Bears getting the early 6-0 lead by forfeit in the 125-pound class.
Logan Robertson of West Virginia gave the team a 10-0 lead defeating Aaron Friedhof by major decision 8-0 in the 133-pound class.
After a forfeit from West Virginia in the 141-pound class and only having a four-point lead 10-6, Devin Wilhelm of West Virginia defeated Matthew Rosson in the 149-pound class by major decision 11-2, extending the lead to eight points 14-6.
Another forfeit by West Virginia in the 157-pound class brought the score to 14-12 in favor of the Golden Bears, but Morgan Peterson gave Southern Virginia University their first lead of the dual 16-14 after defeating Jephte Jean Paul by major decision 10-1.
West Virginia defeated their next three opponents against Gavin Blair by major decision 10-1 in the 174-pound class, followed by Cole Oldham in the 184-pound class by tech fall, and then over Matt Speelman in the 197-pound class by decision 9-2. The Golden Bears extended their lead to 27-16 going into the final match of the dual.
In the 285-pound class, Nico Ramirez defeated Aaron Davis by tech fall in 1:01. With his victory, Ramirez now ranks ninth in all of DIII for falls at 12.
The second dual of the day saw both teams beginning with 6 points apiece after a forfeit from the Knights in the 125-pound class and a forfeit from Liberty University in the 133-pound class.
The Flames were dominant in their dual going 8-2 against Southern Virginia University on the day beginning with Charles Hudson defeating Tyrell Barney by tech fall in the 141-pound class.
Michael Gowen earned a victory over Matthew Rosson again by fall in the 149-pound class, followed by Chad Cantrell getting a win over Nicolas Korhonen by major decision 11-3 in the 157-pound class.
Joe Scott defeated Morgan Peterson by major decision 12-1 in the 165-pound class, followed by Carter Ellis securing a win over Cole Oldham by fall in the 184-pound class, and Austin Amos over Matt Speelman in the 197-pound class by fall.
In the 285-pound class, Ramirez earned the first win against the Flames. Ramirez locked in his second win of the day over Jefferey Allen by decision 7-2.
The Knights host a York and Davis & Elkins in a tri-meet on Saturday, Jan. 25. The match is set for 1 p.m.
