Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's basketball team fell, 107-76, at the University of Mary Washington Wednesday night at William M. Anderson Center.
Trey Dill, Sam Armstrong, and Ricky Stafford led the Knights (1-19, 0-4 CAC), with each scoring 12 points. Dill also added a game-high nine rebounds while Jamier Cross had a team-high four assists to go along with nine points. Along with Stafford, Kimball Cottam and Calvin Seamons reached double figures in scoring with 11 and ten points. Drew Johnson's impressive 39 points (13-for-14) from three guided the Eagles (11-8, 1-3 CAC) while Riley Welch chipped in with 16.
The Knights fell behind early in the first half as the Eagles capped off a 19-5 run in the first five minutes of play. The red-hot Mary Washington offense continued to extend its lead to 39-17 with 9:22 left in the half before Southern Virginia responded with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes of play to cut the deficit to 13. The Eagles withstood the run and headed into the half up 54-38.
At the half, Armstrong and Seamons led the Knights with nine points each while Drew Johnson paced Mary Washington with 15. The Eagles outshot the Knights 55.9 percent (19-for-34) to 36.4 percent (12-for-33) from the field and 59.1 percent (13-for-22) to 35 percent (7-for-20) from three.
Mary Washington continued its strong shooting performance after the break, shooting over 65 (19-for-29) percent from the floor and a blistering 73.7 (14-for-19) percent from behind the arc in the second half, on its way to the victory. The
Southern Virginia held the advantage in bench scoring (40-37), but the Eagles outscored the Knights in 2nd chance points (12-6) and points off turnovers (22-11).
The Knights return to action this Saturday, Feb. 1, on the road at York (Pa.) with tip-off scheduled for 3 p.m. Southern Virginia dropped the previous matchup with the Spartans 75-68.
