Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia Unversity men's basketball team has been eliminated from the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament after suffering a 107-68 loss Saturday afternoon at the William M. Anderson Center.
Sam Armstrong led the Knights (1-25) scoring 26 points (8-for-13) and tying his current program record for three's in a game with seven. George Howe also reached double figures in scoring with ten and pulling down five rebounds while Jamier Cross led the bench with 11 points. Trey Dill led the team on the glass with seven rebounds while Ricky Stafford held a team-high five assists. Da'Shawn Cook recorded a career-high 38 points for the Eagles (16-10) knocking down ten three-pointers.
The Eagles opened the first 2:21 of the game on a quick 8-0 run before Southern Virginia answered with an 11-2 run to take an 11-10 lead with 14:59 left in the half. Mary Washington countered with an 11-2 run of their own over the next five minutes to go up eight, 21-13. The Knights got to within three, 26-23 before the Eagles finished the half with a strong 24-7 run, heading into the break leading 50-30.
The Knights outshot the Eagles in the half 45.5 percent (10-for-22) to 43.2 percent (16-for-37) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-for-12) to 40 percent (10-for-25) from three. Southern Virginia outrebounded Mary Washington 19-13 in the first half. The Eagles did not turn the ball over in the half and managed to force 13 turnovers. Armstrong led the Knights with 14 points at the break.
In the final 20 minutes of play, the Knights were unable to cut into the first half deficit due to a complete offensive half from the Eagles who shot 63.6 percent (21-for-33) from the floor and a red-hot 65 percent (13-for-20) from behind the arc.
On the game, the Eagles outshot the Knights 52.9 percent (37-for-70) to 45.7 percent (21-for-46) from the field and 51.1 percent (23-for-45) to 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from deep. Southern Virginia outrebounded Mary Washington 33-30 and 20-19 in bench scoring.
