BUENA VISTA, VA. – The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team hosted Brevard and Pfeiffer in a USA South doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Knight Arena. The Knights came away with two victories, taking down the Tornados in four sets 3-1 in the first game, and sweeping the Falcons in game two.
How It Happened:
Game One: Brevard
- The Knights made program history, setting a new single-game service ace record with 24 total aces, breaking the previous record back in 2017 where Southern Virginia tallied two back-to-back 20 ace matches against Mary Baldwin
- Sydney Hopkin led the offense with 13 kills, followed by Courtney Pinkston with 10 and Brenna Clyde with nine
- Jessica Ensley marked a career-high eight aces with Pinkston recording six and Sage Matheny with five
- Emma Steiger led the defense with 24 digs with Jilane Pedersen adding three blocks
- After a first set loss to the Tornados, the Knights regrouped in the second set
- Brevard held the 13-12 advantage midway through the set, but Brenna Clyde sparked a 12-1 scoring run led by two aces from Jessica Ensley
- A final attacking error from Brevard locked in the 25-15 set victory, evening the match 1-1
- Southern Virginia made quick work of the second set, marking a new season record point differential set victory, outscoring Brevard 25-4
- Brenna Clyde and Sydney Hopkin led the charge with three kills apiece
- Midway through the fourth set, Courtney Pinkston led the team on a 4-0 run to go up 16-11
- Later in the set, Abby Gregory got into the scoring mix with a kill from Sage Matheny, followed by a final ace from Emma Steiger to lock in the 3-1 victory
Game Two: Pfeiffer
- Courtney Pinkston led all players with 16 kills, with Brenna Clyde recording 14 and Sydney Hopkin with seven
- Ashley Torbenson dominated with her serves, handing out four aces
- The Knights controlled the match from the opening whistle, jumping out to a 14-6 lead led by three kills from Brenna Clyde
- A final 4-1 run, topped off by a kill Courtney Pinkston, locked in the 25-15 set victory, going ahead 1-0 in the match
- Southern Virginia took control early with an 8-3 lead again led by Clyde with three kills
- Later in the set, Courtney Pinkston took matter into her own hands, recording two kills and final block to put the team up 2-0 with a 25-18 victory
- In the final set, raced to a 14-6 lead and didn't look back
- A final kill from Courtney Pinkston completed the sweep, taking the final set 25-15
