BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team took on Greensboro College in their first of three home games for the week Thursday night, taking down the Pride in four sets 3-1.
Impact Players:
Courtney Pinkston: Game-high 23 kills, two blocks
Tatum Matheny: Career-high 10 kills, 22 digs
How It Happened:
Set One:
- Southern Virginia set the pace of the game from the opening whistle, jumping to a comfortable 8-3 lead led by two Sage Matheny aces
- Both teams went back and forth scoring points with Greensboro closing the gap to a two-point deficit 13-11 off a Payton Shiflet kill
- The Knights regained their six-point advantage courtesy of three Brenna Clyde kills
- Three costly errors by the Pride gave the set to the Knights 25-21, taking the 1-0 lead in the match
Set Two:
- After trailing 6-2 early, Courtney Pinkston got things rolling, leading the 7-0 charge with four kills to go ahead 9-6
- Greensboro punched back later in the set after trailing 11-16 with a 10-2 barrage to go on top 21-18
- Southern Virginia countered confidently with a 7-2 run of their own capped by a final Courtney Pinkston kill, taking the 25-23 second set win and the 2-0 lead in the match
Set Three:
- The two teams were evenly matched in the third set, exchanging the lead and scoring runs, before the Pride scored five consecutive points, setting up the set point 24-21
- The Knights would not go down without a fight, rattling off three straight points led by a block and a kill from Courtney Pinkston and topped off with a kill from Sage Matheny to force overtime
- Greensboro would ultimately take the set victory off a service error from Southern Virginia and a final kill from Kelci Brooks, avoiding the sweep and forcing a fourth set
Set Four:
- With the score knotted at five, the Knights used a 5-1 run led by kills from Pinkston and Brenna Clyde to jump back ahead 10-6
- Later in the set, Southern Virginia smelled victory and began to pull away with another 7-2 scoring run
- A service error stopped the bleeding for the Pride, but a final 6-0 blow, capped by an Ashley Torbenson kill, locked in the 3-1 victory for the Knights

Southern Virginia remains home for the weekend, taking on Methodist and NC Wesleyan on Saturday, October 8, in a two-game quad match in Knight Arena. Game one is slated for 10 am and game two is scheduled for 4 pm.
