Women's Soccer's First Half Program Record Pushes Southern Virginia Past Pfeiffer

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team welcomed league opponent Pfeiffer University to Knight Stadium Friday night under the lights, following a two-week away game stretch on the road. After 90 minutes, the Knights came away with the 4-0 victory, improving their overall record to 7-5-1.

How It Happened:
Southern Virginia controlled the game from the opening whistle, maintaining possession of the ball from the start.

In the fifth minute of the game, Matia Murray scored her second goal of the season off an unassisted goal in front of the cage. Morgan Romney took the initial shot, but Pfeiffer's goalkeeper deflected the shot away, but Murray was there to control the rebound.

Four minutes later, Courtney Montes got into the mix, scoring her second goal of the season, firing a shot from over 20 yards out from the goal. The Falcon' goalkeeper got a hand on the shot, but Montes put enough power behind it to put it in the back of the net.

With under 24 minutes remaining in the half, Murray connected with Morgan Romney, who had a clear path in front of her, presenting a pristine shooting opportunity. Romney got the shot she wanted off from outside 20 yards from the top-left side of the box, placing it in the bottom right corner of the goal outside the reach of the goalie. The goal marked Romney's sixth goal, and 13th point, of the year, sitting atop the team in total points, surpassing Makinna Winterton.

In the final minute of the half, Hailey Gadd got a free kick opportunity from 50 yards away from the cage on a foul committed by the Falcons. Gadd decide to take the shot, putting it on goal, and forcing the goalkeeper to make the save. Pfeiffer's goalie was unable to bring the ball under control, and Lindsey Clausen was Johnny-on-the-spot, putting the loose ball in the net for the team's fourth goal of the half and the game.

The Knights owned the game with a comfortable 4-0 victory, setting a single-season first half scoring record with four goals, while outshooting the Falcons 19-1, along with a 9-0 difference in corner kicks.

Southern Virginia's offense was honed in all game, recording a 47.37 shot on goal percentage, while tallying a 57.14 shot percentage in the first half.

The Knights hit the road again on Wednesday, October 19, traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina, taking on Greensboro College at 5 pm.
