Monarchs Cling to First Half Goals to Take Down Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team closed out homecoming weekend competition Saturday evening, giving up two first half goals to fall to conference foe Methodist University.

The Knights came out with high intensity, pressing up the pitch and applying pressure to the Monarchs. The pressure led to a Southern Virginia corner kick in the third minute of the game. The ball found its way through multiple players inside the six landing at the feet of Calum Yule who got a quick shot off as the defense closed in on him. Methodist goalkeeper, Matthew Walker made an impressive save to keep his opposition off the board.

Just three minutes later, the Monarchs would find the back of the net when Sean Laney sent in a beautiful ball from near the end line and teammate Hudson Zeisman pounded it past Sean Gutzman in goal for the Knights.

Southern Virginia didn't let the goal change its game plan, continuing to press hard and break quickly once gaining possession of the ball.

Methodist would increase its lead to two on a corner kick taken by Zeisman. Charlie Teachey got a head on the cross and guided it past the keeper into the back of the net just before halftime.

The Knights came out with even more pressure at the start of the second half, pressing even higher up the pitch to try to win the ball back. The Monarchs remained calm and collected in possession, showing their poise and maturity in the midfield.

The Methodist defense also remained stout, turning away any Southern Virginia attacking opportunity.

The Monarchs would hold onto their clean sheet to claim the 2-0 victory in Knight Stadium.

Southern Virginia has a week to prepare for William Peace, a league opponent, next Saturday, October 22. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
