Southern Virginia has Record-Setting Performance on Senior Night Against Meredith

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University field hockey team dominated Meredith Saturday afternoon in the final home contest of the season, winning 7-0 to even the overall series at two victories a piece.

The Knights got off to a great start with the team controlling possession and playing on the front foot.

Southern Virginia would finally get on the board towards the end of the first period when senior Elizabeth Sorto tallied her third goal of the year after an outstanding individual effort.

Fellow senior, Katie Smith, increased the Knights lead to two after Carly Hoffer slipped past a couple defenders and sent the ball into a dangerous position. Smith was in the right place at the right time to hammer the ball into the back of the cage.

Just three minutes later, defender Ashley Torgeson received a pass from Sorto and snuck the ball past the Meredith goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.

The second half started in a similar fashion with the Knights maintaining the lion's share of the ball. Most of the possession came in the attacking half of the field.

Southern Virginia added to their lead after a penalty corner, converted by Karenna Olson off an assist from Ellie Marble.

The fourth period saw Sorto score two more goals for her first career hat-trick and just the second ever in Southern Virginia field hockey history.

The Bealeton, Virginia native's three goals and one assist breaks the single-game record for points.

Freshman Carly Hoffer would add to her season total in the final two minutes of the game, scoring her sixth goal of the year.

The three goals in the final quarter of play gave Southern Virginia its largest margin of victory and most goals in a game in program history.

This was the first of back-to-back matches against the Angels, with the teams playing again on Wednesday, October 26 at Meredith.
