Knights get Overtime Victory for Second Consecutive Win over Angels

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Southern Virginia University field hockey team won an exciting overtime thriller against Meredith College on Wednesday with a score of 5-4.

The Knights struck early in the first period after Ellie Marble lasered a pass to Carly Hoffer who blasted a shot past the Meredith keeper to take the 1-0 advantage. The Avenging Angels fought back from the early deficit and scored the game's next two goals.

Katie Smith evened the score after she found the back of the net after a gorgeous assist by Hoffer. Avery Anderson scored her first goal of the year after an impressive individual effort in the last minutes of the second period, leading to a 3-2 Southern Virginia advantage.

Meredith came out energized and focused at the start of the second half, and were able to tie the score at three. The Knights, however, dug in defensively and limited the Avenging Angels scoring attempts to just one in the third period.

The fourth quarter proved to be the most electric of the night, with the teams trading goals for a 4-4 score at the end of the period. Elizabeth Sorto continued her outstanding senior season, getting on the board early in the fourth quarter.

The Avenging Angels goalie turned away a plethora of scoring opportunities for the Knights in overtime. Sorto, however, proved to be the hero of the game after she was able to score on a golden goal opportunity for Southern Virginia, her second of the night and seventh of the campaign.

The win pushes the Knights all-time record versus the Angles to a 3-2 series advantage.

Southern Virginia looks to add to their historic season as they travel to Frederick, Maryland on Saturday, October 29th to take on the Chargers of Hood College. The game is set for 2 p.m.
