MISENHEIMER, NC. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Pfeiffer University for a two-game Saturday morning quad match, taking on Pfeiffer and Brevard. At the end of the day, the Knights went home with two sweeps over the Falcons and the Tornados, improving their overall record to 21-7 and 14-1 in conference play.
Game One: Pfeiffer
Sydney Hopkin led all players with 14 kills, followed by
Courtney Pinkston with 12 while
Sage Matheny distributed the ball well, dishing out 33 assists.
Emma Steiger kept the ball in the air, recording a game-high 13 digs.
Southern Virginia struggled to get offensive production going in the first set, finding themselves down 16-11, after the Falcons used a 6-0 run off two Madison Honeycutt kills.
The Knights tied the set up at 20 following a
Sage Matheny ace, and quick 3-0 scoring run moments later topped off by a Pinkston ace, gave the team the 23-21 lead.
After Pfeiffer forced overtime,
Brenna Clyde and
Sydney Hopkin wrapped up the first with back-to-back kills to put the team ahead 1-0, taking the set 26-24.
Both teams traded blows in the second, with the set knotted at 13, but Hopkin brought life back into the team, starting a 5-1 scoring run to go ahead 20-15. Hopkin would go on to record the final kill of the set, giving the team the 28-26 set victory, and the 2-0 lead in the match.
Midway through the final set, with the game tied at 13,
Brenna Clyde got things with a kill, beginning a 4-0 scoring run to the Knights up 17-13. Two points later, Southern Virginia kept the pressure going, using a 6-3 run to make the new score 23-18. Two final kills from Hopkin and Pinkston completed the sweep for the team, taking the final set 25-19.
Game Two: Brevard
Courtney Pinkston led the team with 13 kills along with four aces.
Emma Steiger dominated from the service line, recording a game-high six aces while
Jessica Ensley followed with four.
The Tornados briefly got the upper hand on the Knights to start the match, going up 3-0, but Southern Virginia punched back, scoring seven consecutive points led by two
Courtney Pinkston aces.
Brevard clawed back, coming within one point 11-12, but the Knights again jumped ahead 18-11, capped by an
Emma Steiger ace.
Jessica Ensley got into the mix at the end of the set, recording the final kill to put the squad up 1-0 with a 25-18 first set victory.
Both teams were evenly match at the beginning of the second set, with Southern Virginia holding on to the 9-7 advantage, before running ahead 13-7 off two Pinkston kills. The Knights quickly took care of business the remainder of the second, using a final 9-1 scoring run to take the set 25-14.
Southern Virginia began pulling away in the third set after four consecutive points put the team up 13-8, forcing Brevard to take a timeout. The Knights completed the sweep over the Tornados, using a final kill from Pinkston to win the final set 25-18.

Southern Virginia travels back to North Carolina on Wednesday, October 26, to take on Greensboro College. Game time is set for 5 pm.
