GREENSBORO, NC. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Greensboro College Wednesday night to take on the Pride. After three sets, the Knights swept the opposition, maintaining the No. 1 seed in the conference.
Courtney Pinkston led all players with 14 kills, followed by Sydney Hopkin with 11. Pinkston demonstrated her defensive talents, recording a season-high five blocks. Sage Matheny led the team well, dishing out 25 assists, while Emma Steiger rounded out the stats with 14 digs.
The two teams were evenly matched though the first part of the match, with Southern Virginia holding onto the 10-8 lead before a four-point run sparked by a Pinkston kill, allowed the team to pull away with the 14-8 lead. A final 5-2 run, and a final Hopkin kill, gave the Knights the 1-0 lead in the game with the 25-19 set victory.
Southern Virginia wasted no time in the second set, jumping ahead to a 6-2 lead courtesy off kills from Hopkin and
Jilane Pedersen. Later in the set, the Knights were rolling with a 19-8 lead, with Hopkin leading the charge with two more kills and a block.
Courtney Pinkston recorded the 24th point off a kill before
Ashley Torbenson ended the second set with a clutch block.
In the final set, Southern Virginia sensed the sweep, and raced to a 14-5 advantage led by three kills and an ace from Pinkston. The Knights made quick work of the third set, running away with the 25-15 victory, completing the sweep.
Southern Virginia stays on the road on Saturday, October 29, traveling to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, for a two-game Saturday quad match at NC Wesleyan. The Knights take on Methodist at noon and then take on the Bishops at 4 pm.
