BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team wraps up the regular season with a final two-game home stretch, taking on Mary Baldwin University on Tuesday, October 25 at 7 pm and Friday, October 28 at 6 pm.
The Series:
The Fighting Squirrels hold a 1-0 record between the two teams, and the Knights will have their eyes set on avenging last year's loss where a last-minute goal pushed Mary Baldwin past Southern Virginia.
In the game,
Kassaundra Gorton scored the lone goal for the team in the 70
th minute, tying the match up at one. With 30 seconds remaining in the match, Annie Ammons connected with Shea Rider, who fired a shot past the Knights' goalie, scoring the game-winning goal for her team.
Coming off a 3-0 victory last year on the road, Southern Virginia will look to add another win against Meredith College in Knight Stadium. Last year's win snapped a three-game losing streak, with three different Knights scoring goals for the team.
After a scoreless first half of play,
Maybel Harris scored the team's first goal unassisted in the 60
th minute. Six minutes later,
Sydney Liles connected with
Delaynee McKeachnie, putting the team up 2-0 before
Kimi Kanekoa scored her first career goal in the 83
rd minute, locking in Southern Virginia's 3-0 victory.
Impact Players:
Morgan Romney will be looked to produce offense, leading the team in points with 18, along with
Matia Murray who's been heating up in the later part of the season, scoring four points in the past three games.
Defensively,
Alyssa Trueman will keep the team in contention for winning, averaging two saves per game in the past week.
Ella Thomas, and
Annalise Huber will need to keep the shooters at bay, forcing difficult shots for Trueman to deny.
Mary Baldwin's, Vanessa Alfaro-Young enters the match with 15 points and will be the primary target for the Knights defense.
Keys to the Games:
If Southern Virginia can execute transition off the counter, and get both teams off balance, the Knights will have better odds in their favor.
Forcing shots in settled offensive scenarios will allow for better ease of mind, knowing that
Alyssa Trueman can make the necessary saves.
