BUENA VISTA, VA. - The Southern Virginia University Football team returned home to take on Methodist University in Knight Stadium. Using a two-score run in the fourth quarter, the Monarchs survived the Knights, taking home the 36-23 victory.
It did not take long for Methodist to get on the board, using six plays to go 64 yards down the field to score the first touchdown of the game off an 11-yard run from Keyshaun Pete to put the team up 6-0.
Four minutes later, Cade Neslson bulled his way through the defense, using a final two-yard run to put the team ahead 7-6 to complee the seven-play 79-yard drive.
Methodist squeezed in three more points before the end of the quarter by a 26-yard Trevor Hargett field goal to put his team back on top 9-7.
The Monarchs kept the momentum on their side, going 97 yards down the field, topped off by a 29-yard connection through the air between Brandon Bullins and Kobe Praylow to extend the lead to nine points, 16-7.
Southern Virginia punched back 35 seconds later, with Colten Shumway finding Jireek Washington open past the secondary, going 74 yards down the field to score his first touchdown of the season bringing the team within two points 14-16 with eight minutes remaining in the half.
After a quick Monarch touchdown, the Knights grabbed three more points to put on the board before heading to the locker room for the halftime break, with Jackson Burbidge sinking the 19-yard field goal, cutting the deficit to five points 17-22.
Following the intermssion, Southern Virginia got right back to work, regaining the lead 23-22 off a Jacob Wood touchdown.
Methodist held the Knights scoreless in the fourth quarter while using two touchdowns to solidify the 36-23 victory.
