BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team snagged their first conference win of the season at home Saturday night, cruising to a 5-0 victory over NC Wesleyan.
How It Happened:
The Knights established a solid momentum early on, taking control of the time of possession in the first half, keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field.
Makinna Winterton started the offensive barrage with a prime scoring opportunity, but the Bishop's goalkeeper stood tall with a big save.
Winterton would not be denied, receiving a pass from
Morgan Romney and firing the ball in the back of the net to put the Knights up 1-0 in the 33
rd minute of the match.
Five minutes later, Winterton drove the ball down the right side of the field, spotting
Madison Sollis in the box. Winterton crossed the ball over, and Sollis was able to put the ball past NC Wesleyan's goalie, scoring her first career goal.
After the halftime break, Southern Virginia kept their foot on the gas, scoring just eight minutes into the second half.
Matia Murray broke free from the defense, and crossed the ball over to
Maybel Harris, scoring the team's third goal of the game.
In the 60
th minute, Murray again produced another scoring opportunity, sneaking past the back line, and dished out a pass to
Lakyn Hansen, who also scored her first career goal.
At the end of the match, the Bishops committed a foul that set up a free kick just outside the box, with
Morgan Romney being called to take the shot. After the whistle, Romney fired the ball in the left corner of the goal, scoring Southern Virginia's fifth goal of the game, setting a season-high single-game scoring record.
