Knights Women's Volleyball Sweeps Weekend Matchups, Taking Down Methodist and NC Wesleyan in Three

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team kept their winning streak alive, extending the number to seven consecutive victories, sweeping both Methodist University and NC Wesleyan Saturday morning in Knight Arena.
 
Game One: Methodist
  • Brenna Clyde led all players with 15 kills, tying her career-high, while Courtney Pinkston recorded nine, and Jilane Pedersen tallied seven
  • Ashley Torbenson dominated from the service line, dishing out five aces
  • The Knights jumped out to a 10-5 lead, led by two Pinkston kills, but the Monarchs clawed back, bringing the set within two points 11-9
  • Torbenson jump started an 11-2 scoring run, doubling up Methodist 22-11. Brenna Clyde led the charge with five kills
  • After an attacking error by the Knights, Abby Gregory closed out the first set with back-to-back kills, putting the team up 1-0 with the 25-12 win
  • Midway through the second set, Southern Virginia clung to a two-point advantage 12-10, but Pinkston got the team going again, sparking a 9-1 scoring run led by three Clyde kills, extending the lead to ten points, 21-11
  • A final kill from Pinkston set up by Sage Matheny closed the second set with a 25-21 victory, putting the squad up 2-0
  • In the final set, the Knights made quick work of the game, racing to a 10-2 lead courtesy of three Ashley Torbenson kills
  • Southern Virginia never looked back, using two final kills from Jilane Pedersen to complete the sweep, winning the final set 25-14
 
Game Two: NC Wesleyan
  • Courtney Pinkston shined with a game-high 11 kills and a career-high seven aces
  • Sydney Hopkin had a solid outing, recording eight kills and four blocks
  • Southern Virginia set the tempo early, cruising to a 16-4 lead in the first set led by four Courtney Pinkston aces
  • A final attacking error by the Bishops locked in the 25-12 first set victory for the Knights, going ahead 1-0 in the match
  • Southern Virginia carried their momentum into the second set, jumping ahead to a 16-7 advantage
  • Sydney Hopkin woud spark a final 6-2 scoring run, led by three Pinkston kills to take set two 25-14
  • NC Wesleyan punched back in the third set, gaining a 10-9 lead midway through
  • Southern Virginia would not be phased, using a 12-3 scoring run, led by kills from Jilane Pedersen and Sydney Hopkin to regain a comfortable 21-13 lead
  • Sage Matheny recorded the team's final kill, before an attacking error from the Bishops completed the sweep with a 25-16 set victory

Southern Virginia remains home on Tuesday, October 11, welcoming Mary Baldwin University to Knight Arena. Game time is slated for 6 pm.
