Newman Sets Two Career Records in Southern Virginia Women's Basketball Victory Over Meredith

BUENA VISTA, VA. — After a loss earlier in the week to the University of Mary Washington, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team (4-3) took care of business Saturday afternoon, walking past league opponent Meredith College (1-5) in Knight Arena.

"I am impressed with how well we bounced back from our loss on Thursday," stated Head Coach, Lynette Schroeder. "We were able to dial in and play good team basketball. It was great to see Addy rise up and lead us defensively and offensively tonight."

Sophomore Addison Newman had her best game of her career, recording a game-high, and career-high, 26 points, shooting 10-for-13 from the field, and hitting six of her seven three-point shots while dishing out four assists. Newman displayed her defensive capability, with nine rebounds and three steals to add to her resume.

"Coach really emphasized all of us pushing forward and bouncing back and I really believe that is what we did that," exclaimed Newman. "As a team, we worked hard together to improve and get this win. I am very lucky to have my teammates behind me to help me and coaches that put me in situations to be successful. It was definitely a team effort to get the job done tonight.  Every player played hard. It was a great team win!"

Following behind Newman, Eve Schmalbeck and Alyssa McKrola added quality minutes and points off the bench, combining for 23 points with Schmalbeck scoring 12 and McKrola adding 11. The pair combined for nine rebounds, with Schmalbeck tallying five offensive rebounds.

The Knights set the tempo for the game from the opening whistle with two quick scores from Jadie O'Bray and Courtney Olson. Southern Virginia maintained that momentum into the second quarter with a 14-point, 25-11 lead.

The Avenging Angels showed resilience in the second quarter, only allowing Southern Virginia to outscore them by two points, 22-20, and went into the locker room with the 47-31 advantage. At the half, the Knights shot 51.32 percent from the field and 51.43 percent from three.

Southern Virginia maintained their dominance the remainder of the match, taking home the 86-58 victory. The Knights finished the game shooting a combined 42.6 percent from the field, and nailing 35.7 percent of the their three-point shots. The team dominated the boards with 52 total rebounds, scored 32 points in the paint, and the bench owned the game with 42 points.

The Knights remain home heading into next week, welcoming rival school Washington and Lee University to Knight Arena on Tuesday, December 6, with game time scheduled for 6:30 pm.
