Southern Virginia Men's Soccer Drops Game at Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell to Ferrum College in a high scoring affair Saturday night.
The Knights got the scoring started in the ninth minute after Tanner Gonder forced a Panther defender to make an errant pass while trying to clear the ball. Kenyon Grange, a freshman from Farmington, Utah, intercepted the ball just outside the 18, chested it down and fired a rocket past the keeper for his first career goal.

Ferrum tied the game at one in the 23rd minute off a Leo Galpin penalty kick. The penalty was awarded after goalkeeper Sean Gutzman came off his line but was called for a foul after making contact with an opposing player.

It didn't take long for the Panthers to take the lead after the penalty. Just three minutes later, Amanuel Walie gained possession of the ball and put a curler past the defenders and Gutzman. Ferrum added to their lead just 26 seconds later when Damiano Laduca took advantage of a misplaced pass by the Knights and hit the net for the Panthers third goal in four minutes.

Just before the end of the first half Southern Virginia cut the deficit to one. Josh Dubinsky played a ball in behind the defense and Ferrums keeper tried to gather it but lost possession. Gonder then flicked the ball up to himself and connected on a half volley that found the back of the net.

The Panthers put the game to bed when Leo Galpin scored his second penalty kick of the game, pushing the score to 4-2.

The Knights will continue on the road when they play Shenandoah on Wednesday, September 14, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
