Southern Virginia Women's Soccer Wins Second in a Row with 2-1 Victory Over Ferrum

FERRUM, VA. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team traveled to Ferrum College Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup, with the Knights taking home the 2-1 victory over the Panthers.

The Series
Coming into the match, both teams squared off for the tenth time in program history with Ferrum holding the 3-5-1 record. The Knights won the first three encounters, with the first matchup coming back in 2009 where Southern Virginia won 2-1.

Last year, the teams tied in Knight Stadium after the Panthers had won the previous five meetings.

How it Happened
Southern Virginia began taking control of the match in the 21st minute, with Courtney Montes getting off a shot, followed by four more consecutive attempts.

Ten minutes later in the 31st minute, Madisen Staples connected with Morgan Romney to score the first goal of the game to put the Knights up 1-0. On the goal, Staples, and Romney both recorded their first-career points for the team.

The Southern Virginia defense held their ground the remainder of the half, keeping Ferrum at bay with a scoreless attempt in the first half. Goalkeeper Alyssa Trueman continued her dominance with three saves.

Seven minutes into the second half, Ferrum's Ali Austin committed a crucial foul that set up Southern Virginia with a penalty kick opportunity. Rachel Bodkin stepped up to the line to take the shot, capitalizing on the PK to score her second goal of the season, and putting the Knights up 2-0.

The Knights controlled the remainder of the match, only allowing two more shots the remainder of the half, one of which was the Panther's lone goal, making the final score 2-1.
