Knights Field Hockey Falls to Maroons

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Field Hockey team played their second consecutive home game Wednesday night, falling to the Roanoke College Maroons.

Roanoke moves to 3-0 overall against the Knights, with the Maroons winning the first two games in 2019 and '21.

The Maroons got off to a hot start, scoring three first quarter goals, including two by Grace Vernarelli. Roanoke's Vernarelli added an assist on the other goal in the quarter, giving her five points in the first 15 minutes of play.

Roanoke carried their excellent play into the second quarter, where they scored in the fourth minute, pushing their lead to four.

The Knights' defense, led by goalkeeper Kiera White, picked up their play half way through the quarter. White made seven second quarter saves and 16 on the night.

Southern Virginia's offense was held to just two shots in the game with just one on goal that was saved by Roanoke's goalkeeper Madison Wingerter.

The Knights will have over a week to prepare for their next game against Notre Dame of Maryland University next Friday, September 23.
