Third Quarter Surge Pushes No. 19 Yellow Jackets Past Knights

ASHLAND VA. — The Southern Virginia University Football team traveled to Randolph-Macon College to take on the No. 19 nationally ranked Yellow Jackets for week three of the 2022 season. In the matchup, the Knights were unable to complete the upset, falling 47-20.
 
Key Stats:
Colten Shumway: 16-25, 224 yards, two touchdowns
Jireek Washington: six receptions for 101 yards
Maikeli Tuinakauvadra: four total tackles, one and a half sacks
 
First Quarter:
  • On the opening drive of the game, Southern Virginia started on their own 25 and began their march down the field with a ten-yard pass from Colten Shumway to Jireek Washington
  • Shumway connected with Washington two more times to bring the team to the Yellow Jacket 28-yard line
  • Two plays later, Mike Brown was called to action to attempt the 36-yard field goal attempt
  • Brown drilled the field goal, completing the 14 play, 56-yard drive (3-0)
  • Eating up half the quarter's clock on the first drive, Randolph-Macon took over on the ensuing drive on their own ten-yard line
  • The Yellow Jackets made their way down the field with 11 rushes and only one pass attempt, taking themselves to Southern Virginia's five-yard line
  • During the drive, Dylan Andrew led the team with four tackles while Jonah McFarland added two
  • On the final play of the first quarter, Alex Sewell sacked Drew Campanale for a two-yard loss, holding Randolph-Macon scoreless in the first quarter for the first team all year
Second Quarter:
  • Campanale did not let the sack phase him, or his team, connecting with JoJo Marinella in the end zone for the seven-yard touchdown pass to put the Yellow Jackets back up (7-3)
  • The Knights were forced to punt on their next drive, but JoJo Marinella fumbled the punt return, handing the ball back to Southern Virginia on the Randolph-Macon 31-yard line
  • Mike Brown converted his second field goal of the game from 39 yards out, bringing the team within one point (7-6)
  • The Yellow Jackets punched back on their next drives, scoring two consecutive touchdowns, but the Knights' defense came up big, blocking both extra point attempts (19-6)
  • On the final drive of the half, Southern Virginia went 75 yards in four plays, setting up a Colten Shumway six-yard rushing touchdown to bring the team within six points heading into the halftime break (19-13)
Third Quarter:
  • Following the break, the Yellow Jackets came out swinging with a touchdown on their first drive off an Andrew Ihle one-yard rushing touchdown (26-13)
  • The Knights punched right back, needing only four plays for Shumway to find an open Clinton Boxley for the 64-yard touchdown pass (26-20)
  • Randolph-Macon began to pull away in the game at the end of the third quarter, adding two more touchdowns to the scoreboard to lead the team into the final quarter of play up 40-20 over Southern Virignia
Fourth Quarter:
  • The Yellow Jackets converted on their next drive, intercepting Shumway, and placing the offense right back on the Knights' 43-yard line
  • Randolph-Macon marched right down the field, setting up Cameron Chatmon for the two-yard rushing touchdown (47-20)
  • Both defenses were solid the remainder of the quarter, holding each team scorless until time ran out with the Yellow Jackets remaining undefeated, locking in the 47-20 victory
