Southern Virginia Volleyball Splits Games Against Meredith and William Peace

BREVARD, NC. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team traveled to Brevard College for a double-header matchup against Meredith College and William Peace University. The Knights split the games, sweeping the Avenging Angels, and falling to the Pacer in four sets 3-1.
 
Game One: Meredith
  • With the score 4-3, Pinkston sparked a 5-0 run to jump ahead 9-4
  • Later in the set, Jilane Pedersen led the charge on a 7-2 run to bring the team's lead to eight points 18-10
  • A final kill from Pinkston locked in the 25-19 set win, and making the match score 1-0
  • In the second set, Southern Virginia found themselves down 12-8, but Sage Matheny led the team with two aces on a 7-1 scoring run, putting them back up 15-13
  • Pinkston later led the way with four aces of her own, extending the team's lead to seven 21-14
  • Two final kills from Sydney Hopkin and Pinkston put the team up 2-0 with a 25-22 set win
  • Both teams were dead even in the final set, with Meredith clinging to the one-point advantage 22-21 late in the set
  • Sydney Hopkin recorded a kill, leading the way to a final 4-1 run topped off by a kill from Pinkston, completing the sweep with a 25-23 final set victory
Game Two: William Peace
  • Emma Steiger and Courtney Pinkston shined on both sides of the ball with Steiger recording 27 digs while Pinkston tallied 19 kills
  • After a first set loss, the Knights were able to bounce back in the second set, using a 4-0 run sparked by Jilane Pedersen to put the team up 12-9
  • Later in the set, Southern Virginia extended their lead to five points following a 5-0 run led by three Sydney Hopkin kills
  • A final kill from Courtney Pinkston gave the Knights the 25-22 set victory, tying the match up 1-1
  • The Pacers made quick work of the third set, and came back in the fourth set after being down 19-23 to lock in the 3-1 match victory
Up Next
Southern Virginia returns home on Tuesday, September 27, to take on cross-town rival Washington & Lee for a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 6 pm.
