Southern Virginia Women's Volleyball Wins Second Straight; Takes Down Salem in Four

WINSTON-SALEM, NC. — The Southern Virginia University Women's Volleyball team captured their second consecutive victory Thursday night on the road against league foe Salem College. In the conference matchup, the Knights took home the four-set victory, 3-1.
 
Key Stats:
Courtney Pinkston: Game-high 17 kills, four aces
Jilane Pedersen and Ashley Torbenson: six blocks
Sage Matheny: 40 assists
Emma Steiger: 25 digs
 
How It Happened:
Set One:
  • The Knights jumped out to a 5-0 lead led by three kills from Brenna Clyde
  • Salem punched back later in the set, using a five-point run of their own to take the 12-11 lead
  • Later in the set, both teams traded runs and leads, but the Spirits held the one-point advantage 18-17
  • Sage Matheny and Sydney Hopkin connected for a kill the following play, sparking a 6-0 run led by two Tatum Matheny aces to set up the final point of the first set
  • Jilane Pedersen and Sage Matheny closed the first with a final block to take the set 25-20
Set Two:
  • Both teams began the set with four-point runs, going back and forth with the lead, with the Knights holding onto a 7-6 advantage
  • After the Spirits went up by two, 14-12, Courtney Pinkston led a 4-0 charge to take back the 16-14 lead
  • Salem fought back, finding themselves close to a set victory 23-21, but Pinkston took matters into her own hands, recording two kills on the final four-point run to come back and take the 25-23 victory and go up 2-0 in the match
Set Three:
  • The Spirits bounced back in the third set, jumping to a 12-5 lead, and did not look back
  • Southern Virginia fought their way back, coming within four points 18-22 led by a block and a kill from Jilane Pedersen
  • Salem closed out the third, preventing the sweep with a final kill, and forcing a fourth set with the Knights
Set Four:
  • After going up 6-4, the Spirits raced to a 10-6 lead following a six-point spurt
  • The lead did not last long with Southern Virginia using a 14-4 scoring run to make the new score 20-14
  • Sydney Hopkin sealed the game for the Knights with a kill, locking in the 3-1 victory

Southern Virginia returns home on Saturday, October 1, to host a quad-match, welcoming Brevard College, Mary Baldwin University, and Pfeiffer University to Knight Arena.
