WINCHESTER, VA. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team traveled to Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon to take on the Hornets for the team's second game of the week. The Knights were handed their first loss of the season, falling 3-1.
Shenandoah controlled the game from the opening whistle, holding strong on the back line, and not allowing Southern Virginia to get a shot off in the first half.
In the 22
nd minute, Bryanna Marinari of the Hornets scored the opening goal of the game off an assist by Peyton Lubinsky to put the team up 1-0.
The Knights defense anchored themselves, forcing the Hornets to shoot wide of the goal until the 45
th minute was up. Southern Virginia went into the halftime break down 1-0.
Shenandoah continued laying on the pressure, firing another goal in the 68
th minute by Chandler Gallant off a Kristina Skulte assist, making the score 2-0.
Ten minutes later, Gallant scored her second, and team's third, goal of the game unassisted.
The following minute,
Makinna Winterton scored her first goal of the season unassisted, putting the team's first goal on the board, bringing the new score to 3-1.
The Knights were able to muster two more scoring opportunities with shots on goal by Winterton and
Lindsey Clausen, but the Hornets' goalkeeper, Karissa Dominick, stood her ground with two saves and locking in Shenandoah's victory.
Southern Virginia returns to action on September 7
th, traveling to Fredericksburg, Virginia, to take on the University of Mary Washington. Game time is set for 4 pm.
