AURORA, NY – The Knights field hockey team finished a grueling three game stretch in just five days,
falling to the Pioneers of Transylvania University on Monday.

In the first quarter, the match was held to a scoreless stalemate even with the Pioneers applying a great
deal of pressure to the Knights defense. Rachel Emel's five saves in goal during the quarter highlighted a
strong showing on the defensive side of the ball for Southern Virginia.

Heading into the second quarter, Transylvania picked up where they left off in the first, adding 10 more
shots, including seven on goal. The Pioneers were able to get on the score sheet three times in under
three minutes.

The Knights fought back, scoring on a penalty corner just before the half. The ball played in found the
stick of Karenna Olson who laid it off to her teammate, Carly Hoffer, who snuck it past the Pioneers
goalkeeper.

Katie Smith gave the Knights their second goal, cutting the deficit to just one, just three minutes into the
third quarter. The goal came after a penalty corner, where Southern Virginia put two shots on goal, both
turned away by the Pioneers. The ball was knocked around and Smith eventually got her stick on it and
put the ball in the back of the net.

In the fourth quarter, Transylvania put the game to bed by adding another three goals, including one by
Makenna Saward, giving her three on the day.

Southern Virginia will hope to bounce back on Saturday, September 10, when they take on Randolph-
Macon at 1 p.m.
