Knights Welcome Pride in Mid-Week Conference Clash

BUENA VISTA, Va. – After a quick, one-game stint away from home, the Southern Virginia University men's basketball team (8-5, 1-1) returns to Knight Arena to take on league opponent Greensboro College (5-7, 0-1) on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Knights are coming off a dominant victory over the Tornados of Brevard College on Saturday, 87-55. Four players reached double-digit scoring, including a season-high from Bryan Tapia who drained four three-pointers.

Greensboro comes into the match on a three-game losing skid with its most recent loss coming at the hands of fellow USA South member, William Peace, on Saturday. The Pride saw their lead slip away in the final seconds and were unable to get a shot off at the end of game to try and force overtime. The team shot 50 percent from the field and had 10 players score at least four points, but turned the ball over 16 times leading to 19 points off turnovers for the Pacers.

The Pride have a very balanced offence with four players averaging over 10 points this season. Matthew Brown, a junior forward, is a very balanced player who is coming off one of his most complete performances of the year, recording nine points, eight rebounds and a season-high six assists. Brown is currently leading the team and third in the conference in rebounding, pulling down just under eight boards per game. Most of his rebounds come on the defensive end, where he leads the USA South with 6.7 defensive rebounds per game.

Brown sits behind Koa Baker, whose nine boards per game leads the conference. He also sits second in the league in offensive rebounds, averaging 2.9 per contest. In the game against Brevard, the Eagle Mountain, Utah native scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, both game-highs. Baker's efforts earned him USA South rookie of the week, his first of the year.

Southern Virginia will look to move up the USA South standings after dropping its first match to league leaders NC Wesleyan, while Greensboro is in search of its first conference triumph.
