WINSTON-SALEM, NC. — A first quarter surge of 24 points led by
Alyssa McKrola's perfect shooting of 4-for-4 from the field for nine points, jumpstarted Southern Virginia University's path to a confident 78-55 victory over Salem College Tuesday night. The victory brought the Knights' record to 6-7 overall, while advancing to 5-2 in conference play.
"We talked in the locker room before about playing as a team, making that one more pass, and being the aggressors and that's exactly what we did," stated
Alyssa McKrola. "We all are each other's number one fan and you just don't see that anywhere else and that support that we have for each other was shown on the court tonight."
Coming off the bench, McKrola had a career, and season-high, with 15 points, knocking down 7 field goals along with a three. The Longmont, Colorado native added three assists while bringing in three rebounds and tallying five steals to go along with impressive night.
Abigail Snyder continues to produce well for the Knights, matching McKrola's 15 points with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Snyder shot 60 percent from the field to help lead the team to victory.
Addison Newman had a solid outing with 13 point, five rebounds, and two assists to round out the scoring.
The first half was all Southern Virginia, outscoring the opposition 49-19 while overshadowing Salem with a 59.4 percentage from the field compared to Salem's 28.1 percent. Although not being able to connect for scoring opportunities, the Spirits were tough on the boards, keeping the Knights within two rebounds 11-9.
Salem flipped a switch in the third quarter, only allowing Southern Virginia to score one more point than them 16-15 and were led by Dionne Sampson and Tamsi Echendu with five points. The Spirits carried their momentum into the final quarter, with Echendu adding seven more points to outscore the Knights 21-13, but it was not enough for a comeback, falling to the Knights 78-55.
With a rematch against Pfeiffer looming this weekend, the Falcons are hoping to avenge their 77-60 loss to Southern Virginia one week ago, the Knights will look to stay perfect against Falcons for the fifth meeting between the two teams in program history. The game takes place on Friday, January 13 in Misenheimer, North Carolina with tipoff set for 7:30 PM.
