MISENHEIMER, NC. – In the team's first outing of the two-game weekend, Southern Virginia University (7-7, 6-2) grabbed their second consecutive victory Friday night with a 66-60 win over Pfeiffer University (2-12, 0-7).
Adding her sixth double-double of the year, Courtney Olson led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 47 percent from the field with eight field goals. Addison Newman flanked Olson with 14 points of her own, while the freshman duo of Abigail Snyder and Presley Heggie combined for 25 points.
The Knights came out strong, grabbing a quick 12-2 lead off five Snyder points. The Falcons bounced back, scoring nine points the remainder of the quarter to keep the score within seven points, 18-11, heading into the second. Although outscoring Southern Virginia 17-14, Pfeiffer still had work to do in the second half, trailing the Knights 32-28 at the break.
Newman got the scoring going at the start of the third with a fast break layup, helping the squad rebuild an eight-point advantage. With her six points, Olson added a clutch block midway through the third to spark more life into her teammates looking ahead to the fourth quarter.
With 36 seconds left on the clock, Pfeiffer's Hannah Isley knocked down a three to bring her team within four points, 63-59, but with time not on their side and a final layup from Olson, the Knights held off the Falcons for the win.
Southern Virginia looks to add to their winning streak on Saturday, January 14, by taking on Brevard College at 4 pm.
