BUENA VISTA, VA. — Coming off of a huge win against current second-place Brevard in an overtime thriller, Southern Virginia University (10-9, 9-3) took on Mary Baldwin University in the teams' sixth all-time meeting. With a new energy surging into the team, the Knights kept their record perfect against the Fighting Squirrels with a one-sided 74-44 victory.
"It's always nice to see minutes for our whole roster," Head Coach
Lynette Schroeder said after the game. "Each athlete works hard daily, and seeing it pay off is special."
Freshman
Abigail Snyder led all players with 15 points, going 6-for-8 from the field and shooting 75 percent from behind the arc.
Barrett Jessop popped off with 11 points, marking a season-high, going 3-for-4 from three.
Southern Virginia wasted no time getting on the board, needing only five seconds after tip-off for
Addison Newman to find
Emma Camden open for a three. The bucket was indicative of what would ensue for the remainder of the game. Camden led the team with six points in the first quarter, going perfect from the field while recording three steals on the team's full-court press strategy.
Presley Heggie followed Camden with five points, helping the team shoot a season-high 68.8 percent from the field in the first quarter.
The second quarter was all Snyder and Jessop, with the pair shooting 100 percent from three with four.
Courtney Olson added two impressive steals to the mix before
Ruth Kempler checked in and recorded four strong points for the squad. The Knights flipped a switch from the first quarter to the second, sinking 66.7 percent of their threes before heading into the halftime break with a confident 47-25 lead over the Squirrels.
At the half, Jessop led the game with nine points, followed by Snyder with eight. Jessop also led the team in rebounds with three, while Olson had her presence felt with four steals.
Following a slow third quarter, fans were treated to seeing the bench take the reigns, grabbing quality minutes and getting into the mix. Returning from injury, sophomore
Taylor Miyasaki electrified the team with a deep three. Miyasaki immediately followed that up with a steal and a dish to Camden, who finished the fast break with a layup. A final three from Miyasaki closed out the action, with the Knights securing the 74-44 win, extending their winning streak to three games.
"One thing we emphasized tonight was playing our game the whole game, and right off the bat, we came out playing our game, and we never let off the gas," stated Miyasaki after the game.
"I've been itching to get back on the court since my injury, and I've been working hard to get back, so it felt great tonight to FINALLY be able to get back out there," continued Miyasaki. "My first game back, and it felt like I never left! As I came out, Coach gave me a high five and said, "welcome back." That was just a great moment for me."
Southern Virginia takes a brief pause from conference competition, taking on Virginia University of Lynchburg for the first time in program history on Friday, February 3, with tip-off at 6 pm.
