BUENA VISTA, VA. — On the team's Senior Night against Methodist University Saturday afternoon, the game went exactly like that; the senior's night. All three seniors on Southern Virginia's Women's Basketball team led the charge in the 82-59 victory over the Monarchs, with
Barrett Jessop and
RaeAnn Lessing recording career-high nights.
Jessop led the team in points, tallying a career-high 16 points and going 6-for-11 from the field while knocking down four threes. Jessop added four rebounds and dished out two assists.
Courtney Olson balled out with a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks. Lessing rounded out the senior scoring with a career-high nine points, shooting 67 percent from the field.
Emma Camden had an impressive night tying her season-high 12 points off her 62.5 field goal percentage and two threes.
"I felt I played with everything I had," stated Lessing. "I only have a few more weeks left to play college ball, and I want to go out with a bang. The team played great tonight, and we are unstoppable when we play at our pace and pass the ball one more time."
"Honestly, I'm so proud of this team," added Jessop. "We've come so far since the start of the season, and we are just continuing to reach our potential and get better and better at playing team basketball. I went into the game, focusing on playing together and having fun. I lost my grandpa five years ago, and today, February 4, would've been his birthday. He was my biggest supporter, and I felt he was by my side and guiding me the whole time. It was an amazing senior night, and I couldn't have asked for a better team to play with."
Just as they did against Brevard, the Knights wasted no time going on the attack, only needing three seconds to get on the board with a Camden bucket off the tip-off, with a dish from
Addison Newman. Lessing wanted her presence felt, and she did just that, scoring the next two baskets for the team. At the end of the first, Southern Virginia accumulated a 17-10 lead over Methodist, with
Presley Heggie leading all players with five points.
The second quarter was all Jessop, shooting lights out from behind the arc with three threes.
Maria Savvun introduced herself to the game with what is now becoming a reoccurring scenario, her third buzzer-beater before the end of the half of the year with a savvy floater. The last-second points guided the squad into the halftime break with a 41-27 advantage.
After the break and a slow third quarter, both teams began trading buckets in the final quarter. Methodist had their best quarter of the game, shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 80 percent from three, going 4-for-5. Olson heated up with six points and three rebounds, while Jessop added five more to her running total to snag her career-high 16 points. The Knights outscored the Monarchs 23-20 in the final quarter to lock in their 82-59 victory, advancing to 11-9 overall and 10-3 in conference play.
Southern Virginia has a quick turnaround time, traveling to Greensboro, North Carolina, to take on current first-place Greensboro College on Wednesday, February 8. The fourth meeting between the two programs commences at 6 pm.
