Knights Women's Basketball Bested by Battling Bishops in Conference Matchup

BUENA VISTA, VA. — In a back-and-forth affair against the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team dropped to 5-7 on the year with a 79-73 loss Saturday afternoon.

With her second double-double of the week, senior Courtney Olson led the way for the Knights, recording 16 points and 11 rebounds while knocking down six field goes and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Abbigail Snyder continued with her hot hand, shooting 40 percent from the field and hitting two threes. Coming off the bench, Maria Savvun had a solid outing with ten points and three rebounds.

The two teams went toe-to-toe through the first half, with the Bishops clinging to a three-point lead after Addison Newman connected with Savvun, knocking down a three with just one second remaining on the clock. That momentum carried over into the third quarter where Southern Virginia outscored NC Wesleyan to reclaim the 61-59 lead heading into the final quarter.

Using a hot start in the final quarter, the Bishops were able to garner a nine-point advantage, eventually running out the clock and taking home the 79-73 victory. The win brought NC Wesleyan to 4-1 in conference, while dropping Southern Virginia to 4-2.

The Knights hope to collect themselves, traveling to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to take on Salem College on Tuesday, January 10 with tip off set for 6 pm.
