BUENA VISTA, VA - The Southern Virginia Men's Basketball team clinched its second consecutive victory of the season, prevailing against a determined effort from Averett University.
The Knights asserted early dominance in the game, establishing a five-point lead. However, Averett gathered momentum and surged to a 23-17 advantage. A pivotal jumper from DJ Green triggered a 12-point swing, propelling the Knights to a six-point lead in the waning minutes of the first half.
Despite the Cougars responding with layups and free throws, they went into halftime with a lead of 35-31.
The Knights emerged strong in the second half, reclaiming the lead after six minutes of play, courtesy of a layup from Tyler Kartchner. Averett staged a comeback, regaining the lead, but Kartchner leveled the score with a layup and three successful free throws.
A crucial layup from Koa Baker shifted the lead, and from that moment onward, the Knights never relinquished it. Noteworthy is the team's impressive performance at the free-throw line, making 29 out of 32 attempts in this closely contested game.
For the Knights, Malakai Olson, Tyler Kartchner, DJ Green, and Koa Baker all amassed double-digit points, showcasing a collective effort that contributed to the team's success. Their combined accuracy of 24-26 from the free-throw line played a crucial role in securing the victory for the Knights.
Looking ahead, the Southern Virginia remain active and will travel to Ferrum to face their third ODAC foe on Tuesday, November 14th. This marks the fourth meeting between the Knights and Ferrum College, with the Knights securing an overtime win against the Panthers last year.
