FERRUM, VA - The Southern Virginia men's basketball team fell in a non-conference showdown against the Ferrum College Panthers, the Southern Virginia Men's basketball team faced a challenging 62-76 defeat.
The Knights began the game on a fiery note, spearheaded by early three-pointers from Malaki Olson, DJ Green, and consecutive shots from beyond the arc by Alex Weiland, propelling them to an 18-9 lead. However, the game's momentum shifted due to fouls and a critical turnover, swinging the advantage over to the Panthers with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Southern Virginia managed to level the score in the fourth minute, but an intense exchange of plays saw the teams deadlocked at 31-31 heading into halftime.
After the break, the Knights surged ahead with crucial free throws from Koa Baker and Kartchner, along with a pivotal jumper by Baker, granting them a 45-40 lead. Despite this, the Panthers orchestrated a relentless offensive spree that left the Knights struggling, resulting in Southern Virginia hitting just 1 out of 10 field goal attempts until Olson managed to contribute five points to stop the momentum. Unfortunately, the lead had become insurmountable, and the Knights ultimately succumbed to a 62-76 defeat.
Despite their commendable effort, the Knights encountered difficulty finding their shooting rhythm, finishing at a 30.8% field goal rate (20-65) compared to the Panthers' impressive 53.57% shooting in the second half.
Looking ahead, the Knights continue their road journey as they head to Roanoke for the upcoming Roanoke Tournament on Friday, November 17th. Their first matchup is slated against Berry College at 7:00 PM.
