BUENA VISTA, VA - The Southern Virginia men's basketball team (3-4, 0-0) faced a challenging matchup against the Eagles of Mary Washington (5-2, 0-0), resulting in a setback for the Knights.
In the early minutes, both teams exchanged baskets, with four lead changes within the first nine minutes. The Eagles then capitalized on a six-point streak to take a 19-13 lead. Southern Virginia mounted a comeback, narrowing the gap to two points after free throws from Malakai Olson and a layup from DJ Green. However, offensive errors allowed Mary Washington to enter halftime with a 34-27 lead.
After the halftime break, the Knights struggled offensively as the Eagles executed a block and scored twelve points in the opening five minutes. Despite efforts from Koa Baker and Malaki Olson to improve offensive execution, the Knights faced challenges in securing defensive stops.
Southern Virginia's struggles extended beyond the arc, with the Eagles shooting 8-18 (44.4%) compared to the Knight's 3-23 (13.0%) from three-point range.
Koa Baker showcased a strong performance, recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Malakai Olson led the team in scoring with 17 points.
Looking ahead, Southern Virginia hits the road for a showdown against D1 Campbell University in Buies Creek on Saturday, December 2nd, with tip-off set for 2:00 PM. The Knights aim to regroup and bounce back in the upcoming contest.
