BUENA VISTA, VA. — In the team's season, and home, opener, the Southern Virginia University Men's Lacrosse team took on former C2C foe St. Mary's (MD.) in Knight Stadium. An early first-quarter flurry paved the path for the Seahawks to follow, taking down the Knights 21-9.
Gabe King led the team with five points off of two goals and three assists, while
Eric Norr recorded four points with a hat-trick and an assist.
Caleb Brodie did all he could in between the pipes, tallying 14 saves.
The first quarter was all St. Mary's as the Seahawks controlled both sides of the ball from the opening face-off. Johnny McGrain found Cal Wilcox for the team's opening goal 45 seconds into the game before Keegan Preis scored an unassisted goal to go up 2-0 two minutes later. St. Mary's closed the first quarter, going 2-for-2 on their man-up opportunities while maintaining the Knights' offense and holding them scoreless after the first quarter.
Gabe King created separation from his defender to find
Connor Haacke open in front of the crease with a crafty no-look pass to score the team's first goal of the game. After another Seahawk goal, King swept toward the middle of the field, turned downhill, and put the ball in the back of the net to bring the team within three goals, 5-2, but went into halftime down 7-2 after giving up two late quarter goals.
St. Mary's offense exploded in the third quarter, outscoring Southern Virginia 8-3 to extend their lead to ten, 15-5. The offense was too much as the Seahawks carried that momentum until the final whistle, going home with the 21-8 victory.
Southern Virginia will use the upcoming week to prepare for Hampden-Sydney College in the third meeting between the teams. Game time is set for 1 pm.
