ROCKY MOUNT, NC. — For the second consecutive game,
Maria Savvun recorded a career-high in points, leading the team in Saturday's game, as Southern Virginia University's Women's Basketball team could not overcome North Carlina Wesleyan, 76-67.
Savvun led the team in the box score, recording a team-high, and career-high, 17 points, along with four steals.
Abigail Snyder and
Addison Newman followed along with 11 points each while combing for ten rebounds.
Savvun carried the team in the first quarter, shooting a perfect 2-2 from behind the arc while adding a free throw. Newman added five points of her own off two baskets, and a free throw before
Alyssa McKrola matched her with five more points. The Knights came out hot, shooting 64.3 percent from the field, keeping the Bishops within striking distance 23-25 after one quarter.
After an electric first quarter, both teams struggled to earn a basket, stalemating each other with 11 points before heading into the halftime break.
The struggle continued after the pause from action, with Southern Virginia hitting a shooting slump, going 3-for-11 from the field. However, the Knights remained in contention courtesy of NC Wesleyan giving the team nine free-throw opportunities, seven of which the Knights converted.
Both teams woke up in the final quarter with 45 points scored. Snyder led the team with six points off a basket and four free throws, while Savvun added four. Although coming alive, time was not in favor of the Knights as the Bishops held onto the 76-67 victory.
Southern Virginia will prepare for Greensboro College coming to town on Saturday, February 18. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
