BUENA VISTA, VA. — In the team's final regular season game, the Southern Virginia University Women's Basketball team (11-12, 10-6) took on Greensboro College (23-2, 18-0) in Knight Arena, with the Pride remaining undefeated in conference play with an 82-70 victory.
Courtney Olson had her best performance of the season, locking in her eighth double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds.
Addison Newman had a solid outing with 12 points and four assists, while
Jadie O'Bray came off the bench with ten points and four rebounds.
The Knights got on the board early, needing only five seconds before
Maria Savvun scored the game's opening basket off a Newman pass. However, the Pride were not phased and built a 14-point lead off a layup from Ta"Keria Legette in the paint. Southern Virginia closed the first quarter with eight consecutive points to cut the deficit down to six points, 23-17, heading into the second.
Following a slow second quarter that saw both teams struggle to get scoring opportunities, Greensboro held a 41-30 lead over Southern Virginia. Olson displayed her dominance with seven points and seven rebounds, while Savvun showcased her shooting with team-high nine points.
After the halftime break, the Knights shifted the momentum in their favor, coming out hot with a 13-8 scoring run led by six Olson points. Southern Virginia shot 58.8% from the field compared to Greensboro's 50% while keeping their three-point shooting at bay, holding them to 20%.
With the score within four points, 58-54, in favor of the Pride, Greensboro collected themselves and flipped the game back into their hands. The Pride went 9-for-17 from the field while knocking down two of their three three-pointers to outscore the Knights 24-16 in the final quarter to take home the 82-70 victory, locking in the No. 1 seed heading into the conference tournament.
Southern Virginia will await the announcement of the tournament bracket to see who they will be matched against, with the USA South Conference Tournament set to commence on Tuesday, February 21.
