GREENSBORO, NC. — Although Southern Virginia University (11-10, 10-4) got an impressive performance out of
Maria Savvun, who recorded a career-high 16 points Wednesday night, the Knights could not take down current first-place Greensboro College (20-2, 15-0), falling 83-74.
With Savvun's career-high 16 points,
Courtney Olson led the team with 17 points, going 7-for-15 from the field while bringing in eight rebounds and recording four blocks.
Addison Newman also had a solid night with 16 points and two steals.
Southern Virginia kept it close at the start of the game, but Greensboro rattled off back-to-back threes to double up the Knights, 16-8. The Pride closed out the first quarter using a 13-5 run to go into the second quarter with a 23-13 advantage.
Alyssa McKrola led her team with five points off a layup and three.
Midway through the second quarter, the Knights closed the gap to three points, utilizing a 10-2 scoring run led by Savvun's five points. With under a minute remaining,
Barrett Jessop continued her hot shooting streak, sinking a three from deep to bring the team within two points, 37-39. Southern Virginia dramatically improved their shooting from the first quarter (22.73% FG) to the second (42.11% FG), injecting an entirely different energy into the team.
The second-quarter momentum carried over into the third quarter after the halftime break, with both teams trading baskets. Olson hit a solid jumper midway through the quarter to bring the team within one point, 46-47, but Greensboro showed why they are currently first in the conference. The Pride closed the third with an impressive 15-5 run to regain a comfortable 62-51 lead over the Knights.
Although Southern Virginia managed to close the gap again to one point, Greensboro punched back every time. The Pride used one last scoring run to jump back to an eleven-point lead with ten seconds remaining. Olson managed to sneak in one final jumper, but time was not on their side, falling by a final score of 83-74.
The Knights remain on the road heading into the weekend, traveling to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to take on North Carolina Wesleyan. Southern Virginia will look to avenge an earlier season loss to the Bishops in the team's fourth all-time meeting. Game time is slated for 3 pm.
