Knights Fall to League-Leading Bishops in Conference Clash

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – After a quick break from USA South play, the Southern Virginia University Baseball team (7-12, 0-6) squared off against reigning East Division champs and current league leaders NC Wesleyan (16-5, 6-0) in a three-game series beginning Friday night.

The Battling Bishops jumped out to an early lead in the series-opening game, tallying six runs in the first inning. The hosts never looked back, adding four runs in the third inning and one in each of the next three to secure a 13-0 victory.

NC Wesleyan continued to impress in Saturday's two games, registering 17 runs and 20 hits between the two games.

After failing to record a run in the first two contests, the Knights got on the board in the third and final match. After Robert Stempin led off with a single to left field, Nate McCallum singled to right field, and Will Parker was walked to load the bases with just one out. Nick Daynes stepped up to the plate and blasted the ball to right field, bringing in two runs. He then stole a base, putting runners on second and third with hopes of chipping away at the Bishop's lead. However, back-to-back strikeouts got the home team out of the bind.

The Bishops added two runs in their portion of the inning to restore the four-run advantage and made the score 7-2 after tallying another run in the bottom of the seventh.

Excellent NC Wesleyan pitching in the final two innings closed out the match, securing the sweep of the three-game series.

Southern Virginia will look to bounce back in another midweek non-conference contest against Mary Washington on Tuesday, March 28, with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
