FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Southern Virginia University Baseball team (7-13) took on the University of Mary Washington (18-7) in a non-conference clash Tuesday afternoon, falling after a late rally by the Eagles.
The hosts quickly jumped out to an early lead, earning four runs in the bottom of the first after a plethora of walks and stolen bases. Opportune hits brought runners in, but the Knights did well to get out of the inning without more damage, with
Colby Hoffman forcing a flyout for the third out with the bases loaded.
Southern Virginia got on the board in the next inning, with
Ty Martinez scoring after leading off with a triple to left field. After
Benjamin Horsley was walked,
Jake Watson reached on a fielder's choice, registering an RBI after Martinez reached home plate.
The Eagles were quick to answer, adding another run in their portion of the second inning. A lead-off triple was recorded for the second time in the inning, with Bobby Ayscue getting to third after a shot to right center. He was then brought home on a single to left field by Ty Lowe.
Will Parker opened the third inning with a single up the middle, and then back-to-back batters were hit by pitches to load the bases. Martinez's sacrifice fly brought in Parker, and the other runners advanced on an error. A single by Horsley scored
Stockton Hall, cutting the deficit to two.
Both sides tallied runs in the fourth inning, keeping the deficit at two. With two outs on the board in the top of the inning, Parker smashed a ball to right center and rounded the bases to third. On the next at-bat, Hall's single to center field saw Parker home for his second run of the afternoon.
After three scoreless innings, the hosts added to the lead in the bottom of the eighth, registering four runs, making the score 10-4.
Down six in the final inning, the Knights hoped for a late rally, but pitcher Jackson Beal forced three quick outs to close out the contest.
Dawson Jones was impressive from the mound, allowing just two hits and no runs in three innings pitched.
Southern Virginia returns to conference play this weekend, taking on Pfeiffer in a three-game series that opens on Friday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
