Knights Men's Lacrosse Wins Big in Defensive-Backed Effort

BUENA VISTA, VA. — Southern Virginia's men's lacrosse team put on a dominant performance against Huntingdon College, winning 17-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Knights outscored the Hawks in every quarter, ultimately securing a convincing victory.

The game started with Huntingdon's Ryan Campion scoring the first goal at the 13:46 mark in the first period. However, Southern Virginia responded quickly, with Jon Yandow scoring an unassisted goal at 9:58 to tie up the game. The Knights then took control of the game, with Clay Haacke scoring two goals and assisting on another to give Southern Virginia a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Southern Virginia continued to build on their lead in the second quarter, with Haacke scoring three more goals and Sterling Thatcher scoring a goal to give the Knights an 8-1 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter saw Southern Virginia continue dominating, with four players scoring goals. Huntingdon's Ryan Campion managed to score his second goal of the game at the 4:40 mark, but Southern Virginia responded with another goal from Peyton Merwin to end the quarter with a 12-2 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Southern Virginia put the game out of reach with five more goals, including two from Connor Haacke and one from Sterling Thatcher while on a man-up opportunity. The final score was 17-2 in favor of the Knights.

Overall, Southern Virginia's offense was firing on all cylinders, with multiple players contributing to the scoring effort. Clay Haacke led the way with five goals and one assist, while Jon Yandow secured the hat-trick and Sterling Thatcher with two goals and one assist. Goalies Caleb Brodie and Landon Roylance also played a strong game, making several key saves to keep Huntingdon's offense at bay.

Senior Seth Millington anchored the defensive unit with a game-high four caused turnovers and six ground balls. Scott DuPaix and JT Cutrer also added to the team's efforts with three caused turnovers each. 

Southern Virginia's men's lacrosse team looks to continue their winning ways when they take on conference rival Methodist University in their next game on Saturday, April 1, at 1 pm.
