BUENA VISTA, VA. — Southern Virginia University's women's lacrosse team faced Meredith College in a tightly contested match, ultimately falling 10-11 to the opposition.
In the first quarter, Jessica Dowdy of Meredith College scored an unassisted goal at the 12:12 mark, followed by Lauryn Turner's unassisted goal at 00:44, giving Meredith a 2-0 lead. Reese Walker scored an unassisted goal for Meredith early in the second quarter, making the score 3-0. Southern Virginia quickly responded with three consecutive goals of their own, from
Alissa Johnson,
Tyler John, and
Addison England, respectively. With the score tied at 3-3, Reese Walker scored her second goal of the game for Meredith, putting them up 4-3. However,
Alissa Johnson of Southern Virginia scored again to tie the game at 4-4.
Later in the second quarter, Johnson scored her third goal of the game, assisted by
Tayllor Millington, putting Southern Virginia up 5-4. But Reese Walker quickly responded with a goal for Meredith, tying the game again at 5-5. Brooke Blades of Meredith scored at the 1:07 mark, giving them a 6-5 lead at the end of the second. A final goal from Johnson, assisted by
Kate Richards, sent both teams into the halftime break with the game knotted at six.
In the third quarter, Sophie LeClaire of Meredith scored a goal on a power play, assisted by Jessica Dowdy, giving Meredith a 7-6 lead. However,
Josie Skopec of Southern Virginia quickly responded with an unassisted goal, tying the game at 7-7.
In the fourth quarter,
Rylee Webster of Southern Virginia scored an unassisted goal, giving her team an 8-7 lead. But Jessica Dowdy of Meredith responded with an unassisted goal to tie the game at 8-8. Meredith then took a 9-8 lead with a goal from their team at the 7:44 mark. Tori Witmer of Meredith scored a goal, assisted by Dowdy, to put Meredith up 10-8 with 6:52 remaining in the game.
Piper Searle of Southern Virginia scored an unassisted goal at the 5:11 mark, narrowing the gap to 10-9.
Tyler John then scored a goal, assisted by
Alissa Johnson, to tie the game at 10-10 with just 2:49 remaining in the game. However, Lauryn Turner of Meredith scored the game-winning goal with just 1:12 remaining, assisted by Dowdy, giving Meredith the 11-10 victory.
Despite the loss, Southern Virginia had several strong individual performances, including
Alissa Johnson's four goals and one assist,
Tyler John's two goals, and
Josie Skopec's one goal.
Southern Virginia's women's lacrosse team will look to bounce back in their next match against William Peace University scheduled for Saturday, April 8, at 1 pm.
