BUENA VISTA, Va. – In the first-ever matchup between the two schools, the Southern Virginia University baseball team (5-5) defeated visiting Capital University (2-5) in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The back-to-back triumphs marked the team's third consecutive victory after dropping five straight.
In the first game of the day, Capital put up two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. The Knights didn't let the pair of runs stop them from coming out in the bottom of the inning and answering with a run of their own.
Shortly after, in the bottom of the second, the Knights tied it up at 2-2 with a moonshot home run from
Sinjun Johnson.
The Knights blew open the scoring with a mess of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take control of the contest.
Ty Martinez opened and closed a relay of nine runs with two dingers, driving in a grand slam to punctuate the already awe-inspiring inning. The freshman concluded with five RBIs in the inning.
Southern Virginia continued its rout of the Comets in the second game of the sunny afternoon. Although Capital University opened up the scoring in the first, Southern Virginia didn't flinch at the small deficit.
The Knights continued with pace and a consistent offense in the second game. The Comets had no answer for the Knights' bat throughout the contest, substituting their man on the mound four times over the course of six innings.
The feast continued in the fifth inning as the Knights played a game of small ball. Martinez,
Jake Watson, and
Tyson Toller all participated in a symphony of threads and bloopers that found their way through the infield defense. Ending in a team effort tacking on another four runs throughout the side to make the score 8-4.
Capital added a run in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to three, but Southern Virginia proved too much, with
Will Parker registering his second save of the young season. Freshman
Ryan Farris recorded his first-ever victory at the mound, allowing just one hit.
Martinez, a freshman from South Weber, Utah, had a career day, tallying four hits and seven RBIs in the two games.
Southern Virginia remains in Buena Vista for its fourth straight home contest, playing Plattsburgh State on Saturday, Mar. 11, at 1 p.m.
