Southern Virginia Grabs First Conference Victories in back-to-back Routs of Mary Baldwin

Staunton, Va. - The Southern Virginia University Baseball team (9-17, 2-9) took on the Mary Baldwin University Flying Squirrels (4-22, 0-11) in a doubleheader on Saturday, with the Knights leading a siege on John Moxie Memorial Stadium, winning both contests in seven innings.

The Knights opened up their barrage of scoring in the third inning, tallying a whopping ten runs. The team began with nine straight hitters getting on base, leading to the opening six runs. The Knights would bring in a few more runs after a pitching change, making the score 11-1 at the end of the inning.

Southern Virginia forged a win with eight doubles and ten singles, playing a long game of small ball full of action-packed baserunning and shots up the middle. The team finished the game with a sacrifice fly from Will Parker, allowing Jackson Massey to reach the plate, making the score 18-6 to end the game.

In the afternoon's second contest, the Knights continued their quest for victory, tallying a program high in runs since their move to the USA South athletic conference.

Ty Martinez forcefully flooded the Knight's offense with two bombs in the first and fifth. Martinez had a career day, recording career highs in home runs, doubles, and RBIs. Benjamin Horsely also hit a solo round-tripper in the fifth to make the score 17-4.

Marcelino Leonardo Jr. capped off the scoring with a double, bringing Nick Daynes and Will Parker home to overcome the Flying Squirrels 19-6 for the Knight's first two conference wins this season.

Martinez ended the day with seven hits on nine at-bats, including three doubles and two home runs, seven runs and nine RBIs.

Southern Virginia will close out the three-game series against Mary Baldwin on Tuesday, April 11.
