Late Goals Puts Eagles and Hornets Over Knights in Opening Weekend

BUENA VISTA, VA – Southern Virginia University's Women's Soccer team opened their 2023 season with a challenging weekend, facing off against Bridgewater College and Shenandoah University.
 
Game One Versus Bridgewater:
 
The Knights kicked off their season against the Eagles on Friday evening, with Bridgewater securing a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia in a hard-fought contest.
 
Scoring began in the 52nd minute when Madeline Bohan of Bridgewater College found the back of the net, assisted by Skyler Daum and Lyric Birkley. SVU responded strongly, with Maybel Harris scoring a goal in the 83rd minute. However, the Eagles' Skyler Daum quickly answered back with her own goal, securing the victory for Bridgewater.
 
Game Two Versus Shenandoah:
 
The Knights faced the Hornets on Saturday in a closely contested match, ending with a score of 3-2 in favor of Shenandoah.
 
Ellie Aiello opened the scoring in the 6th minute for the Hornets, followed swiftly by Maci Rackham's equalizer for the Knights, assisted by Tessa Miller. Maybel Harris added another goal for Southern Virginia, with an assist from Claire Stephens, but the Hornets responded with goals from Karlie Hepner and Kirklyn Wilson to secure the win.
 
Head Coach Rob Dahl praised his team's efforts: "We faced two strong opponents in Bridgewater and Shenandoah, but our players demonstrated their potential and character on the field. We will build on this experience and work towards improving."
 
Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer will continue their season at home on Wednesday, September 6, taking on the Eagles of Mary Washington.
