BUENA VISTA, VA. — In the teams' fourth all-time meeting, the Southern Virginia University Women's Soccer team secured a momentous 1-0 victory against Methodist University in a highly anticipated rematch of last year's USA South Conference Championship. The win marks Southern Virginia's first-ever triumph over Methodist and adds another chapter to the rivalry's history.
The game's lone goal came at the 13:50 mark when
Makinna Winterton delivered a precision strike (her third of the season) into the back of the net outside the reach of the goalkeeper. The play was set up by
Maci Rackham, who provided the crucial assist.
The Monarchs could only get off one shot on goal, courtesy of the tenacious efforts of the Knights' defenders consisting of
Ella Thomas,
Annalise Huber,
Hailey Gadd, and
Paige Varvarigos.
Southern Virginia stays home for the next contest, taking on Salem College in Knight Stadium on Wednesday, September 27, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
