Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia men's basketball team faced two tough contests over the weekend, first falling to William Peace with a score of 64-72 and then to Pfeiffer University with a score of 76-89.
In the game against William Peace, the Pacers exploded offensively, scoring 10 unanswered points. A well-timed timeout, however, allowed the Knights to switch the momentum, taking the lead at 13-12 with a Koa Baker 3-pointer. The game remained closely contested, tied at 22, before the Knights secured a 7-point lead, highlighted by a Tyler Kartchner dunk, heading into halftime with a score of 31-28.
The Knights maintained a solid pace in the second half, but William Peace regained the lead with two threes. Koa Baker's 3-pointer tied the game at 46, but the Pacers took control, establishing a 10-point lead in just 3 minutes. Despite the Knights' efforts, William Peace capitalized on being in the double bonus, hitting crucial free throws and securing a 78-64 victory.
Despite early foul trouble, Koa Baker showcased an impressive performance with 24 points on 10-17 shooting, including 3-6 from behind the arc. Malakai Olson and Tyler Kartchner both posted double-digit scores.
In the second game, the Knights took an early lead with a 17-11 advantage before Pfeiffer clawed back to go ahead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Falcons extended their lead to six, and despite a late rally with three straight buckets from DJ Green, Pfeiffer hit back-to-back threes before halftime, leading 38-30.
Pfeiffer came out strong in the second half, sinking five consecutive threes to increase their lead. Although the Knights reduced the deficit to 11, they couldn't keep up with Pfeiffer's offensive onslaught.
Koa Baker once again led the team in scoring with 23 points, going a perfect 8-8 from the line. However, the team struggled against Pfeiffer's impressive shooting, with a 47.2% success rate from the field and 57.9% from three-point range (11-19).
