Brevard, NC - The Southern Virginia women's basketball team (14-4, 12-0) extended their winning streak to 10 games and maintained a perfect record in the conference after a competitive, back-and-forth battle against Brevard College, ultimately winning 57-54.
Despite an opening three-pointer from Alyssa Weiland, the Knights faced a challenging start, falling behind 5-17. Weiland's three-pointer at the end of the quarter narrowed the gap to 11-21 in favor of Brevard.
In the second quarter, the Knights' offense came alive with nine unanswered points, tying the game at 25 points each. Abigail Snyder's three-point play extended the lead, but Brevard responded with back-to-back threes, leading at halftime with a score of 28-31.
Brevard started the second half aggressively, pushing the lead to eight points. However, the Knights, fueled by a Camilla Norton three-pointer, took the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Knights controlled the final quarter, with contributions from Aysia Foster, Snyder, Weiland, and Presley Heggie, building a six-point lead with four minutes remaining. Nevertheless, back-to-back turnovers by the Knights allowed Brevard to cut the lead to just one point with 34 seconds remaining. An exchange of turnovers left the Knights with the ball, and Maria Savvun's two clutch free throws sealed the 57-54 victory.
Both teams struggled from the field, with the Knights shooting 33.9% (20-59) and the Tornadoes at 35% (21-60). Despite the shooting challenges, the Knights secured the win with a 41-34 rebound advantage, maintaining their winning streak.
Weiland led the Knights in scoring with 16 points and Snyder grabbed a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Southern Virginia will return home to face Greensboro College on Tuesday, January 30th, in the seventh meeting between the teams. The Knights aim to break a four-game losing streak against the Pride.
